With new laws and the reopening of a detention centre, we are witnessing an attack on the right to freedom alongside record-low access to legal advice, leaving most people unable to challenge their detention.
Only through our collective efforts will we be able to resist cruel new legislation and hold the Home Office to account, while supporting those facing detention and deportation. So here are some ways you can help:
1. Become a Regular Donor
Help us be there for people in detention all year round. Becoming a regular donor is one of the most impactful ways to support our work. A monthly gift from as little as £3 makes a real difference, giving us reliable support we can count on and helping make our work more sustainable.
2. Run the Hackney Half Marathon
Join over 24,000 runners dashing through East London in BID’s bright blue kit on Sunday 17 May 2026. Every pound you raise supports our advice work, keeping phone lines open, training volunteers, and providing free legal support to people held in immigration detention. In previous years, our runners have together raised over £15,000. Help us beat that in 2026.
3. Take Part in the London Legal Walk
Join our staff and volunteers for a beautiful nature walk along the River Thames and through London’s Royal Parks on the afternoon of 9th June. We'll be raising vital funds for our advice line, which answers over 8,000 calls a year from people in detention.
4. Volunteer
We're looking for people with specialist skills in fundraising and communications to help our small team reach more people. We also need barristers who can represent our clients in person pro bono at Yarl's Wood, Hatton Cross and Harmondsworth Tribunals. If you think you can help or have other skills you would like to turn to supporting our work email [email protected].
5. Add your voice to our movement to end immigration detention
Help us reach as many people as possible. You can amplify and support our work by following us on Facebook, Instagram, and Bluesky, and sharing BID reports and news to new audiences.
