Legal aid is a vital part of the checks and balances that uphold our democracy. However, in 2012, immigration was excluded from its scope, leaving thousands of people facing immigration detention and deportation without a lawyer.

Everyone, regardless of how much money they have or where they come from, must have equal protection from the law. The government claims that everyone is protected but that is not the case.

BID has been documenting the fall in availability of immigration legal advice since the LASPO cuts in 2012 and our research reveals that people facing detention and deportation experience multiple and compounding barriers to justice.

In the words of our client: “It begs the question, is this truly access to justice or just an illusion?"

Join us on Tuesday, January 23rd at 7pm as we expose the legal aid illusion and call for the reinstatement of Legal Aid for immigration cases.
