BID speaks to the Independent about the use of immigration detention during covid-19 travel ban
BID were asked to comment on the continued presence of hundreds of migrants in IRCs when there is no prospect of removal due to coronavirus travel ban
Following the legal challenge in March, the government had said it would review all cases of immigration detention amidst the pandemic. BID were asked to comment on the fact that hundreds of people remain in immigration removal centres in the UK, despite the health crisis.
Celia Clarke, BID director, spoke to the Independent and said:
The home secretary, Priti Patel, had remained “impervious to arguments based on individuals’ safety, and the lawfulness of detention with no prospect of removal”.
“People in detention tell us that they are not provided with soap and sanitiser despite the Home Office’s assertions to the contrary. It beggars belief that people are still being detained during the greatest public health crisis in recent memory, and in the face of the suspension of removals. People in detention are understandably frightened and desperately worried about their health. Continuing with immigration detention at this time in particular is utterly irresponsible, cruel and unnecessary.”
