BID team of walkers

Join the BID team and you will have an unforgettable experience alongside hundreds of others taking part in Walk the Thames 2018, a fantastic charity challenge event organised by the London Legal Support Trust.

You can walk – or run - the length of a marathon (26.2 miles) or a half marathon (13.1 miles) along the banks of the River Thames.

Pick your own distance and route from the following options:

  • Morning marathon:  Starting at 8:30am from London Bridge and concluding at Hampton Court
  • Morning half marathon:  Starting at 8:30am from London Bridge and finishing at Putney
  • Afternoon half marathon: Starting at 12:00pm from Putney and concluding in Hampton Court

Depending on which route you chose, your journey will take you past a host of memorable London landmarks including Tate Britain, The Shard, Big Ben, Battersea Park, the London Wetlands Centre (wildlife sanctuary), Eel Pie Island, and Hampton Court Palace. We can't guarantee dry weather, but we can promise fresh air and autumnal leaves

Why not take part as a group together with friends, colleagues, or as a fantastic family challenge? (Walk the Thames falls during half term for many schools.)

We would love to have you join our team of walkers and runners. We ask each participant to pay a registration fee of £10, and commit to raising at least £322 in sponsorship. Sign up now

Why are we suggesting you raise £322? Because in the last year we have provided free legal assistance to many parents being held in detention, who had collectively been separated from a total of 322 children. Find out more about parents and children being torn apart by immigration detention.

All our Walk the Thames participants will receive:

  • a BID T-shirt / running vest
  • fundraising support and tips
  • an easy-to-use online Virgin Money Giving fundraising page to help you gather sponsorship from your friends, family and colleagues
  • a map of the route
  • water at the start and at various points along the route.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much training would I need to do?

Firstly, we don’t suggest you run the half-marathon or full marathon distance unless you are already a keen and experienced runner.

If you are planning to walk, don’t underestimate the challenge you are undertaking. Walking for 13.1 miles or 26.2 miles is hard! Although it is entirely possible to do Walk the Thames without any prior training at all, our simple advice would be to make sure you do a couple of long walks in the run up to the 27th October, and don’t attempt to break in new shoes on the day itself.

How much sponsorship money would I need to raise?

We ask each person to commit to raising at least £322 in sponsorship. To keep things simple, this target remains the same whether you are walking or running, doing the half-marathon or the full 26.2 miles. But if you do decide to take on the entire marathon, we would be thrilled if you felt able to go quite far beyond that fundraising target.

Every penny raised goes directly towards helping BID provide free legal advice to people held in detention, helping them get released on bail. For example, £322 is almost exactly what it costs to operate our advice phone lines for one week.

How long will it take?

Victorious pub lunch

Walkers completing the half marathon distance can expect it to take roughly 4 and a half hours, although of course this varies hugely from person to person.

Those who are doing the morning half-marathon route will set off at 8.30am and probably finish at around 1.00pm in Putney (and we suggest you treat yourself to a well-earned pub lunch in The Rocket pub).

If you are walking the full marathon route, you might cross the finish line at around 4.00pm, although some people are still walking at 8.00pm or 9.00pm.

Keen runners will of course complete the course much sooner than that!

What is the route?

Pick your own distance and route from the following options:

  • Morning marathon:  Starting at 8:30am from London Bridge and concluding at Hampton Court
  • Morning half marathon:  Starting at 8:30am from London Bridge and finishing at Putney
  • Afternoon half marathon: Starting at 12:00pm from Putney and concluding in Hampton Court

You can view the map of the route here on Google Maps.

Can me and my friends or family take part together as a group?

Absolutely! Walk the Thames is a great family challenge, and we think that groups of friends will have a good time walking together too. Feel free to use the 3 for 2 group registration discount when you sign up. We can also create a dedicated group Virgin Money Giving fundraising page for your "team" if helpful.
